PropertySheet navigator initial item not selected

I build and run the CPropertySheet example using the navigator and it works as expected. When I use this in my code everything works as expected except that the initial navigator item is not selected (highlighted) even though the correct initial page is displayed. When I click navigator items, they highlight and the page loads as expected. However, the initial navigator item is not highlighted. I have been trying to solve which for some time now, with no success. Any ideas what could cause this?
