I was involved in a small debate/discussion as to whether or not it is safe/proper to put any of the controls on a network drive or shared drive of any kind.

My personal opinion is absolutely not.
In Visual Dataflex it is touted that the runtime can be on a network drive, etc. and this include CodeJock controls that come with it.

Is this in the least, a good practice?
Ideas on keeping this safe and secure, or whether this should even be done?

To my consern, you would propabely be able to running it from network but speed question, the activex must be transfert by the network in memory before it can start so this is taking longer but since today networks are fast for exemple 100Mbs Ethernet transfert in average 3 Mbytes / second and now there is 1Gb networks but not so many with average of 40 Mbytes /second so it only a matter of 1 second more longer to start your application and since cpu also are faster this isn't a big deal but to conflit problems and networks connection lost this may be a problem since if the network is down your application won't run at all. And customers need application run event if no network is up (running in local mode than synchronize with the server) this allow also sellers on the road to use your application and for conflic version since your not the only one how use theses controls your customer may be using another application using different version of the controls so to place controls in system directory may affect others applications if there are not well programmed but put them in your folder may fix this until your customer remove the application.
