Is there an easy way to restore the 'view state' after Populate() has been called?

For example:  Say I have a report control with 3 groups in it. Each group has several items in them.  2 groups are collapsed, 1 is expanded out.  In the group that is expanded, several items are selected.  When populate is called, all the all groups will be expanded, the selection will be cleared and the scroll position will be reset to the top of the report control.

Having the report control do that after Populate() is undesirable.

Thanks.
