Update right away

I want to display some text or an icon on the command
bars status bar just before I do a large save.  Normally when you set this it updates after
the update period has passed (default of 100ms).  However, the save takes a really long time and
no messages are processed during this time so even though the update period has
passed the status bar won't update.  Is
there a way for me to force it to update before starting the save?
