X-Axis major tick labels

I have a chart where the x-axis is labeling years (2011, 2012, etc.). The number of years can vary and occassionally has so many that the labels are so squished together/overlapping which render themselves useless. 
Is there a way to indicate the fequency of the x-axis labels without having to do them all with custom labels?
