I try something simple like:
void CMainFrame::GetMessageString(UINT nID, CString &rMessage) const
{
    rMessage = "blah";
}
and normally this would make the status bar always say "blah" no matter what button or menu item you hover over, but with Codejock only items with blank string table entries seem to show up as "blah", the rest will use the string table entry directly, which is not what I want, I need to load the string table entry for the control, and translate it with an external function, then display it.

there is CXTPControl::SetDescription method,

or you can catch WM_SETMESSAGESTRING, lparam contains (LPCTSTR)strDescription
