The Windows Common Controls for VB contains a toolbar control. You can add this to a form with no border and flat appearance to build a row of icons into a dialog box in a seamless way. For example, in VB6 the Open Project Dialog Box has a combo box on top and next to that a few icons for new folder, back, up, etc. How can I use a CJ command bar to do the same thing with a similar look, except that it can work with the selected theme and Unicode? I know how to hide the gripper, more tools button, etc. but I tried using a commandbar frame, but it's difficult to size it right to always hide the whole client area, and there is extra "band" area visible around the bar with the actual tools.

See here how even in VB itself that bar isn't styled properly for the current theme:

Plus, with the VB toolbar, you can tab to it and an enabled icon is selected. You can use the keyboard to move between the buttons and select one. Tab moves on to the listview.

Maybe the commandbar frame is the wrong way to go? I'm looking for any suggestions. Thanks!
