How it was (ok):
 
If you select an item in a CXTPControlGallery the selection can be determined by calling pGallery->GetSelectedItem() in the notification handler method (called by ON_XTP_EXECUTE).
 
How it is (Version 11.1.0):
 
The call of pGallery->GetSelectedItem() fails (retValue = -1 ) if the CXTPControlGallery is popped up and you select an item.
 
Just have a look at your ribbon sample (for example OnGalleryStyles )
