I have a record with a number of child records, like this:

-- parent ---
       --- child 1 ---
       --- child 2 ---
       --- child 3 ---
       --- child 4 ---

Now I want to replace the parent with one of the children, e.g. like this:

-- former child 2 ---
       --- child 1 ---
       --- former parent ---
       --- child 3 ---
       --- child 4 ---

How do I do this most effectively?
