I don't think it can be done, and it's unfortunate that drag/drop functionality was added without support for this.  Here is the post I entered on the same topic:

How is it possible to set the data which is used for a toolbox windows drag&drop operation ?
(How) can I set the data for the operation when the dragging is initiated ?
