The above call fails in the context of the control on a ribbon and not visible (i.e., change horiz size of app so that the ribbon control is a single button).
 
Ultimately the call is to CXTPControlEdit::_SetEditText(...) and GetLastError() returns 1400 (ERROR_INVALID_WINDOW_HANDLE).
