Active pane with multiple dock controls

   If I have one master (top level) dock pane control which has multiple child dock pane areas (eg. an over all application with 3 different dock pane sub areas that act like MDI client areas).  How will the active pane property act?
1) Will there only ever be one active pane, eg. one of the sub docking panes will have an active child all the others will be null (what will the top level docking pane controller report?)
2) Will each docking pane controller have a different active child?
3) Something else?
